They are pleasing to our eyes and add to clean air. Yet, they can wither easily if they are not well taken care of. In fact, they lose more than absorb water. Here are some tips to help your plants blossom.
1) Get the right soil
Soil contains a mixture of sand, silt, and clay. Good soil should be rich and absorptive. This ensures that it retains water and nutrients for the plant to consume.
Good soil also has the right pH value. What does the pH value signify? It represents the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, with 7 being neutral, below 7 being acidic and above 7 being alkaline. Generally, an ideal pH for plants ranges from 6 to 7.
However, certain plants thrive in sandy and clay soils. It is important to understand the type of plants in your landscape to ensure that they are provided with the right soil and environment to flourish in.
It will also be good to supplement your soil with the right fertilizers. If your soil is low in nitrogen, use a fertilizer that will supplement that.
2) Position your plants properly
Next, positioning your plants is essential for their health, not just for aesthetic purposes. Ensure that the plants are provided with adequate airflow around it.
Additionally, place plants in areas that have adequate sunlight. For tall plants, do not group them together with shorter plants as they may outgrow them and block available sunlight for the latter, thereby inhibiting their growth.
Remember to research on the estimated width and height of the plant that it will grow to. You do not want the plant to outgrow the space that you have placed it in. When grouping plants together, ensure that they have enough space between them.
Lastly, ensure that there is a drainage system in your container or enough holes at the bottom. An effective drainage system ensures that there is enough air for the roots of the plants. This also prevents an excess of water, nutrients loss in soil, and potential soil erosion.
3) Give your plants plenty of light
Find out the sun requirements for each specific plant and position them in an environment that fulfills those requirements. For plants that need full sunlight, they should be placed in a position that has 4 to 6 hours of light daily. Other plants that flourish in shade should receive around 1 hour of direct sunlight daily.
4) Water your plants regularly
An optimal time to water your plants is during the cool periods of the day. This ensures that water is retained and not too much is being evaporated. A recommended time will be in the morning when it is not too hot or windy before the afternoon sun evaporates the water. The evening may not be a good time as water retention will attract bacteria and feed mosquito growth.
How much water should you give your plants? That depends on the type of plant that you have. Generally, 2 to 3 times a week is ideal for most plants. Still, it is good to find out the specific watering requirements for your plants. Some may need constant watering while others only need water once every few weeks.
